3 Fall Beauty Routine Ideas

Fall is here. We know this, of course, because little cafes are selling pumpkin everything, scarves and leg warmers are starting to appear once again, and Pinterest is abuzz with 102 ways to decorate your home for fall. Thank you, autumn, for some of the greatest living! As you refashion your life around the change of season, don’t forget to shake up your beauty routine as well. Here are a few tips to get you, your skincare, and your makeup ready for fall!

Fall into the Right Moisturizer

You probably already know the drill: colder months call for more hydrating skincare. But is that always the case? Instead of following prescribed instructions for how to change your skincare every few months, you may find more success with simply observing your own skin. Yes, most people begin to see more dry patches appear when it cools off (and here are 8 reasons why!), but that may not be the case for you. The key is to pay attention to what goes on with your face.

If you do tend to be a little drier in fall, you have a few options beyond purchasing a new heavy moisturizer.   Instead of removing your makeup with drying cleansers or wipes, try removing that foundation and mascara with pure Jojoba Oil. You’ll have a clean face with a boost of hydration. Also, since cold weather often means low humidity, try sleeping with a humidifier in your bedroom.

Fall into Pumpkin Masks

We know pumpkin tastes good (Hello, Pumpkin Spice lattes!), and we know it’s even good for us (pumpkin pie for breakfast, anyone?), but did you know that pumpkin has amazing benefits for your skin when directly applied?   Pumpkin is full of vitamins and minerals that will help brighten and soothe. It can even prevent fine lines and help those with acne.

Simply add a drizzle of raw honey, and maybe even a few drops of your favorite face oil, to 100% pure pumpkin (make sure you’re not buying pumpkin pie filling!). Apply the mixture to your face for a few minutes and enjoy this relaxing fall-inspired treat.

Fall into Plum Lips

We all know the style of the 90s has been trying to push its way back into our lives for a few seasons, and it seems to be quite successful this fall in the realm of lipstick. Remember those dark plum lips you used to rock twenty years ago? It’s time to rock them once more! Fashion week was ablaze with this rich, purple-hued lip color.

After you expertly line your lips so the lipstick doesn’t seep past your lip line, you’ll be able to use your deep plumb lipstick. From the most expensive high-end lipstick to the cheapest drug store find, you’ll have no trouble finding this must-have color for fall. If you want to have a liner and lip color in one, try the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu.

Menswear Inspired

It’s back-to-school season, and we all know menswear is a hot trend this fall. If men are inspiring women’s fashion, why not also pull that inspiration into beauty trends? Let’s get real for a moment, ladies. Men have the market cornered on the ability to go from shower to out the door in fewer than five minutes. By the time they are in the car ready to roll, we probably haven’t even decided “curly or straight today?” or which accent eye shadow to use.

Though the aspects of traditional and conventional feminine beauty practices are fun and self-satisfying for so many women, there is no denying that all that time getting ready can drain precious time from the day. What if we took a lesson from the men in our lives and realized that simple just may be the way to go? Let’s grab some beauty inspiration from the guys!

KISS: Keep it Simple, Sister

We all may have heard of the mythological man who fills his bathroom counter with this product and that serum and everything new and noteworthy. If you have seen such a magnificent creature, let us know! For most men, they are using their shampoo as face and body wash and slathering the same lotion on their elbows and as they do on their foreheads.

There is something to be said for paring down the daily products we use to save some time (and money!). Simplification becomes the name of the game. Why not try versatile skincare products that also benefit hair like the multitalented Argan Oil? Or invest in some some 2-in-1 makeup products. Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge can add color to both lips and cheeks.

Go Neutral or Go Home

Since most men do not venture into the world of makeup, they are not too concerned with adding anything to the face that isn’t already there. We know the barefaced or “No makeup” makeup looks have been popular for some time, but what if we continued to reduce anything that added to the face instead of simply enhancing what is already there? Maybe try keeping a simple four-product routine.

Here’s a sample daily rundown that will give you a “No Makeup” makeup look: Laura Mercier’s Undercover Pot for concealing dark circles, blemishes, or discoloration, Anastasia’s Brow Powder Duo for full, defined brows, Lancome’s Définicils Mascara for an everyday lash look, and Smith’s Minted Rose Lip Balm to finish off the barefaced look.

Is Expensive Always Effective?

Most men are not emptying their wallets to get a hold of the latest and greatest of beauty products. We ladies know that a great, sophisticated beauty product can often give a big bang for its buck (or many bucks). But maybe we too often fool ourselves into believing that the most expensive is the most effective. We could take a lesson from a guy and try cooling down the beauty product spending.

For example, the beauty YouTube and blogging worlds have been abuzz with NYX’s HD Concealer Wand for both dark under eye circles and blemish or age spot cover-ups. The price of this fabulous concealer? Five dollars. Plus, NYX is an entirely cruelty-free company.

As the temps are cooling off, this back-to-school season may be the perfect time to allow men’s style to not only permeate your wardrobe, but also your beauty routine. At the very least, you’ll add extra time to your mornings. But you may just find yourself a trendy new favorite style.

Last Days of Summer: Vacation Beauty Part 2: Lips & Nails

We are grabbing our chance to squeeze the most out of the last days on summer, shaking things up beauty-wise. Lips and nails are next! They may be small details, but what a world of difference. Goodbye pale lips and tame toes, we can go a bit wild…

1. Go for the Bold Lip

Bold red lips are still huge for this fall. While you may stick with the neutral tones for a workday, a great red lipstick can be perfect for your trip. But you always want it to be the right red. Follow this guide here to help pick the best shade of red to work with your skin tone. In order to make your bold lipstick look it’s best all night long, prep your lips by exfoliating them and dabbing on some coconut oil before applying your lipstick. Take a look at our lip-care guidelines here.

2. Go for the Nail Art

Nail art is not just for little girls. In fact, it is making a huge splash in fall style. Step away from the simple, solid colors and step into patterns.   You can start off easily with a grey base color and a single straight line of accent color. Click here for a video tutorial on drawing nail lines without using stickers or tape. Or you can go wild with a splatter effect created by using a variety of bright colors. Find a salon near you that uses safe nail polish not tested on animals or try it yourself with Deborah Lippmann’s line of nail polish.

There’s no need to stick to your go-to routine when you are adventuring. On your vacation, be bold, be fresh, and let “new” be the name of the beauty game.
